    Wheeee!

Whoa. That seems like too many numbers... Shouldn't it look like this...

Say the number is 020-8111-1111...

Wouldn't you just dial 011 44 20 8111 1111 ?

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-02-27 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
One would think so, but that's not the number. The number, as published everywhere, is (0871) 330 1515. But several combinations of 011 44 and those numbers, such as 020, 02, and so forth, didn't work. The guidebook said 020 for London, except that dialing that number didn't work. The number I listed got us a nonstop ring, which made sense because we were calling the reservations line for a restaurant at 11:05 pm GMT.

I think 0871 is a national rate number... so you'd just have to call 011 44 871 330 1515

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-02-27 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why. DOes this national rate number eliminate the need for a city code? Once Vin's off the phone, I'll try that combination.

Think of it like our equivalent of a toll-free number... except it's not toll-free.

A bit of googling on that number (I'm bored and waiting for very-late chinese delivery... i have to do something to keep my mind occupied so I don't strangle the guy when he gets here) found this website: http://www.fifteenrestaurant.com/fifteen/reservations.html

It says the international number is 011 44 870 787 1515

Cool! We should have looked harder.

Calling the UKis mucho confusing. The last time I tried I was actually in the UK with a bonefide UK resident guiding me over my shoulder (from my US based cell phone which may or may not have made it different) and still could't follow the directions.

We chose to use text messaging for all of our communication instead.

Ah, SMS - the new lingua franca.

I'm trying to call Fifteen, Jamie Oliver's restaurant (he makes me SOOO mad). The bitches don't take reservations over fax or e-mail, the bastards. Any help is appreciated, and will be handsomely rewarded.

I'm planning on emailing my london friends to see if they're interested in going while i'm there - i'll ask for helpful hints for you.

Neat! I want to know your impression of the restaurant too.

London landline telephone numbers start with 0207 or 0208. The traditional seven-digit number then follows. Think of 0207 as zero plus the area code. think of the zero as meaning 'locally.' Mobile phones use a code like 0774 or 0775, depending on the mobile provider.

When you are within the UK, you include the leading zero. Calling from or two the outside of the UK, you replace the zero, which means 'local', with the country code you're calling to/from. So if you're calling me, you'd replace 0774 with 44774.

The only extra bit you need from North America is the over-seas prefix, 011, which tells your telephone provider that you're dialing abroad. So with my number being 0774, you'd dial 011 44 774, plus the remaining seven-digit telephone number - same as in North America.

If that helps..
looking forward to going to Fifteen, though I don't fully understand the Jamie Oliver appeal. It gets such bad reviews for service.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-02-28 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Uh-oh, bad service sucks. I know it's not true, but I wanted Jamie Oliver to serve us (*ahem*, service us, *ahem*) himself. :)

Still slightly confused on the dialling, though everything you and [livejournal.com profile] dipdewdog said makes sense. It's just the lack of familiar, that's all. I'm not in my element.
