Background Jokes

The best part of some comics is what's in the background. I love For Better Or For Worse, a Canadian comic strip that's been around almost precisely as long as I have. The kids in it are the same ages as my brother and me, although our paths have diverged a bit since I started reading it.

Check out the names of cereals...

I also love Bizarro. I used to consider it a bad Far Side rip-off, but now that I know he hides things in every single panel, it's very interesting again. :) Search for firecrackers, UFOs, eyeballs, birds, certain numbers, and a slice of pie in almost every single one!

Are you familiar with The Perry Bible Fellowship (http://www.pbfcomics.com/)?

I've loved For Better of For Worse ever since Lawrence (Laurence?) came out of the closet a few years back.

That was twelve years ago -- I remember because I put the strips up in my locker even though I wasn't out yet. Oooh, rebellious.

I'm noticing a lot of interesting background art in the kids books I have been reading lately. If you also check out the Crow Who Could Fly book that I mentioned recently, there is a hidden pyschotic squirrel on every page.

I cried like a big baby when Farley died saving April...
