Shyness

Have you ever played eye tag with someone, really wanted to meet them, possibly wanted even (ahem) more from them, and not been able to? Possibly due to being convinced that you're the creepy old guy in the scenario? I hate that feeling.

Yes. That's all I'm saying.

You're right, it did feel a bit last class bash-ey in there tonight. I feel really out of place when I'm on campus too. I know that 26 isn't old, but when everyone else is 20, it sure is.

I second that... off-campus parties with kids I don't know = me feeling terribly old.

p/s - Cam, if you're a creepy old guy, where does that place me?

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-04-17 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
It places you still on campus at least! :)

Doesn't change the fact that I'm significantly older in comparison to the wee ones all around me, day after day...

I totally hate playing eye tag, for exactly the same reason. I'm not sure if it's because I stare too long or stare too intently... but it's screwy as hell.

Agreed.

I'm always the creepy old guy. It doesn't stop me.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-04-17 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Naah, you're not creepy. You have a certain je ne sais quoi about you that's definitely not creepy. Odd maybe. If I wanted to be funny-mean, I'd say "sad," but that's totally not correct.

[identity profile] nihilicious.livejournal.com 2005-04-17 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Je ne sais quoi is classy-talk for WTF.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-04-17 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The National Post has a new free daily in several major cities called Dose. It's pretty tabloidy. In each issue's news section there's a subsection called "WTF." [shakes head]

26 is a "creepy old guy"? Come to Atlanta - we don't hand out C.O.G. certification until 30, at least.

At least you're not a D.C.O.G. (Delusional Creepy Old Guy) who wears bicycle pants and a t-shirt from a band he's never heard of, in an attempt to look ten years younger.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-04-17 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
But I'm 28 -- 29 in three months! Atlanta won't last long!

Being back on a university campus, I feel your pain.

Shyness is nice
but shyness can stop you
from doing all the things in life you'd like to.

I'm older than you and I have never felt like the creepy older guy, out of place yes, but creepy no.

Just wipe the drool from your chin, give him a wink and say "Why don't you slide your sweet ass on over and have a seat on my lap, son." that's not creepy at all!

Jokes aside, as long as you are polite and receptive of signals of interest/non-interest you will not be seen as creepy. Older I can't help you with... I still think of myself as being young despite what these little ones barfing in the gutter think. At least I'm old enough to know how to hold my liquor.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-04-17 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* If only I knew how to hold my liquor. :) Actually, I do *know* how: don't have any. My tolerance is just too low, it's silly.

But yes, I agree and know those things in my head -- just not my heart. *shrug*

You were born when I was in third grade; therefore, you are not allowed to be the old guy, creepy or otherwise. Heh.
