Network Security

I'm teaching at the City Of London today (i.e. the offices of the bureaucrats, not the Mayor and Council). The computers are locked down, to a certain extent: when one opens a browser, it goes directly to their intranet, and all "chrome" is removed (toolbars, menubars, address bar, etc). But I can still use Ctrl-O to open a new webpage of my choice.

I tried visiting Gmail from here. Since I was feeling lazy, I didn't bother with a secure connection, I simply typed gmail and then hit Ctrl-Enter. Their firewall rejected it, suggesting the site was not for business purposes. But https://gmail.google.com works just fine. Mwuhahaha.

I'm teaching Train The Trainer, but my students aren't really that lively or energetic (yet). It makes it hard to do this sort of course, since it depends quite a bit on classroom participation. If I taught high school, I'd be one of those annoying teachers who makes everybody participate, I can already tell.

Hmmm. Some days I think being a teacher would be fun. Others, not so much. I think the sheer size of a year's worth of curriculum -- actually, curricula, since I'd be teaching multiple courses! -- is what scares me. With corporate training, I can see the end of the course very easily.

Hmmm. That's enough rambling for now, methinks.

Ooh, you and Jason and I should all go to teacher's college together! Though, I'm wondering if I might have problems getting in given that I didn't exactly finish high school.

Long story short: I hated high school so my plan was to finish all of my required credits (including 6 OACs) in my 12th year (really my 11th because I skipped grade eight). Thanks to my 'type A slacker' mentality that didn't go so well, but I was still desperate to get out of high school so I applied to UNB which didn't require a high school diploma - just certain credits (two sciences, two maths and grade 12 english or something like that). For five years, up until I had my degree in my hand, I was worried that the admissions department had overlooked the fact that I had never actually graduated from high school and were going to make me go back. (I had dreams about having to go back to high school for the three credits I don't have until about two years ago.)

How did you end up being a trainer?

I was job hunting back in 2000 after university, and a recruiter called and asked if I had "A+ training experience." I did not, but I had A+ knowledge, and training experience. So off I went, and the rest is history. :)

Do you guys teach a 'network security for dummies' class? This sounds like an opportunity to upsell more training!

:) They're probably still following MSFT best practices...
