Something I Learned Today

In Canada, companies who get fined for breaking the law (for example, by dumping toxic chemicals into a river), can deduct that fine from their tax bill. An MP tried to start a bill the other day to disallow this, and the Speaker of the House of Commons shut him down, saying it would have the same effect as raising taxes, which means only the government can do it.

Apparently the NDP have been trying to resolve this issue for years, with many different finance ministers. Makes you wonder who's paying for what in Ottawa.

Salut Marc! I have no problem with comments from anybody (except the Passion of the Christ spambots), so welcome!

I doubt the biggest polluters would go south, as there's hardly any land in the Turks and Caicos -- there's no room for big polluting plants and factories! But I bet the banks and investment groups (a.k.a. the rich white man clubs) would love it. :)

Despite my current card-carrying-member status, I'm not sure that the NDP would actually do well in government. Which sucks, cause I don't trust Martin or Harper at all. I vote for ME!
