US Constitution

Well, now that Bush has said he's going for it, it's lose the election or it's over. If Bush is reelected, which I expect to happen, the US Constitution will for the first time include discrimination. Isn't it nice to consider oneself the "land of the free," and yet still have to deal with this? Sheesh.

I am pretty doubtful of getting out of this, since the houses of Congress have already shown their willingness (eagerness, even) to vote for discrimination in the past, especially against GLBT folk. Plus, I just read this on CBC's website:

"An amendment to establish equal rights for women, known as the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), was ratified by 35 states by 1982, three short of the 38 states needed to pass it."

So in the 20 years since, it *still* hasn't been ratified. Equal rights for WOMEN are still a stumbling block. How can people consider the US a bastion of equality? I'm not saying Canada is, but help-me-jebus we're at least a bit better, aren't we? Maybe our laws are just as bad, we just don't show it, I dunno.

Makes me want to move farther away from the border. :)

I can't think up a good retort, but I'm sure I'll come up with one after my latte. Please hold. (pleasant music)

I don't know who you are, but 10 points for longest string of Canada-themed sexual innuendos this week.

[identity profile] nihilicious.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be 15 points, but you forgot the "Eh?"

I don't play hockey. Sorry. I do play a wicked-ass game of Scrabble. Somehow I doubt that's the kind of sexy you're looking for. :)

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh good god Scott don't play Scrabble with [livejournal.com profile] nihilicious, whatever you do. Unless the other option is Trivial Pursuit.

[identity profile] nihilicious.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You are so shaking in your boots at my prowess.

[identity profile] leapfish.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't *play* hockey, but I look great in shoulder pads and a jock. Or at least that's what Calvin Klein told me in order to get me to do that photoshoot.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yummm. Why don't I ever get to see this outfit?

[identity profile] finfinaud.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to see too, if thats ok with cam.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, *hello*. I played pick-up/shinny, never in a league. But I wore my brother's shoulderpads for Halloween and they were *hot*.

I think Scott needs a good fuck from a Canuck too. :-)

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only is polgomy not legal, it's not even a word. :)

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure! You're a hottie, and Canada welcomes hotties.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
To be perfectly honest, we welcome all, hot or not. But the hotties like Scotty get the best igloos. :)

[identity profile] nihilicious.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, in Latin, A hotti usque ad hotte.

[identity profile] alliensis.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The endings, coincidentally, are actually in the correct case, provided a Latin noun hotte, hottis, n. exists and is a 3rd declension I-stem. Your subconscious brilliance is astounding. :P

[identity profile] nihilicious.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No coincidence, my friend.

[identity profile] alliensis.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The day you take up Latin is the day I go up to Halifax to place you under my personal tutelage.

[identity profile] nihilicious.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, quick question: What is the plural of "curriculum vitae"? Seriously.

[identity profile] nihilicious.livejournal.com 2004-02-25 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ta.

Sorry, Cam, for using your journal in furthrance of my personal Latin tutelage.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-25 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's OK, you'll just be invoiced.

(I have no problem with learning, I have sincere problems with religious dogma :-)

If it enters the constitution, I say we get Canada, Mexico and all the small countries together and vote the US off the continent.

"The tribe has spoken."

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Tempting sometimes, but where would all our trucks full of wood, potatoes, grains, chickens, maple syrup, etc drive to then?

([livejournal.com profile] leapfish suggests that they drive to the UK -- we can build a tunnel. Or perhaps a "superbridge." How'd that Chunnel thing work out, anyway?)

[identity profile] kdborg.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Commonwealth Bridge? Only open to Minis?

[identity profile] finfinaud.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Its been suggested on TheOnion.com that Canadians build a bridge to Mexico. Bypassing the US!

[identity profile] kdborg.livejournal.com 2004-02-25 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
I remember that one. lol Probably would have been taken more seriously if it hadn't ended in Winnipeg.

ugh!

[identity profile] petele.livejournal.com 2004-02-24 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I sure hope that what he did today motivates more of us fags to get off our asses and do something. Trust me when I say I will make all my friends vote this year. Hell, I'd vote multiple times if I could!

Now I need to figure out if I think Frank can be converted from a republican. Get him to either vote for a democrat, or Nader at least.

Re: ugh!

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2004-02-25 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Only if Jersey is guaranteed to go one way or the other. Voting Nader under the 2-party system may cause damage (a la Gore 2000)... if you think he could handle getting political with family, consider sending him Bush's resume...
