Buying Bottled Water is Wrong

Buying Bottled Water is Wrong, says David Suzuki.

Why?
  • energy used to capture, ionize, reverse-osmosis-ize, bottle, ship, and then drive home from the store.
  • plastics contain toxic chemicals which a recent study showed can leech into the water
  • in some jurisdictions, there are more laws protecting tap water than there are protecting bottled water

Kitchener's tap water is pretty hard and mineral-filled, but it's still not that bad really. Not as good as Halifax though. :)

We try to just filter our water as much as possible.

While the above may be true, when I was living in NJ, my town sent out water advisories every month to tell us to boil our water and/or filter it before using it for cooking, because the water purification thingie in the county wasn't working correctly. They said people with sensitive digestive systems would have the most issue, which included me AND my dog.

Quinn wouldn't even drink the tap water, as if it smelled funny. So, I had a Brita filter and tank in the refrigerator, and Quinn would only drink the water if he saw me take it from there. LOL!

Arizona is supposed to be better, but we still drink it filtered. I think the issue with bottled water - other than it being purified and the whole marketing of it - is that it is just convenient to grab the bottle. In NJ, I would fill a thermos to take to work (I brewed my own iced tea with the filtered water), but sometimes, it's not always possible to do that.

I think most place regulate tap water more than bottled water, and some probably don't even regulate bottled water at all.

I can totally believe the plastic leaching thing since the water in bottled water tastes "plasticy". We love our fridge which has a 1 year filter built into it so water always tastes great.

Buying Bottled Water is wrong! As a member of the Halifax Watershed Advisory Board I can assure that our water is some of the cleanest and most drinkable in the entire country... :D for a major metropolitan area we have some of the best, there is no need to filter, purify or buy bottled water.

it's actually somewhat odd (however, I can understand why) but the water is better tasting in Waterloo than it is in Kitchener. Once might say this is a farce and people are basically using the old wooo Waterloo is better mantage, however that's far from true. The water DOES taste better. The reason being is that the water comes from two different sources. This, again, is strange since KW is one big city anyway, but apparently the water in Kitchener comes from what is collected through the ground, where the water in Waterloo comes from a few different sources.

hmmm.
