Apparently you can find in-depth news articles* on glossy paper now.

I received a promotional offer from Wired yesterday that was too good to pass up: $12.97 CDN for a one-year subscription. $1.08 per issue. That's so ridiculous I had to sign up to show them the error of their ways.

Today I ruined any monetary benefit I might have gotten by also subscribing to FAIR. Oh well.

I'm looking forward to FAIR. Check out their current slate of articles. I figure it will give me more ammo to use against my Dad. Or more likely right-wing blogs and news outlets, since I'm more comfortable arguing with them than with my father.

Jealous.

I just paid $13.75NZ for the latest issue of Wired.

That is really cool.

I have been trying to cut back on subscriptions to anything, because I am overwhelmed by junk mail from my address being on stuff.

But very cool on getting such a great deal.

Be careful -- I signed up for that deal and after the first year they charged me $40+ automatically for the renewal. Of course, I didn't want a renewal and told them so, and they went away. But I doubt everyone is tenacious as I am about these things.

Yeah, this is actually me second go-around on this cheap Wired wagon. I don't recall what was required to get out last time, but I know that I escaped unscathed. Perhaps they're just preying on the easily distracted.

Not sure how that missed me.

Don't renew it. They'll send you another "come back to us" offer at around $18 for the year.

I didn't renew it last time, and eventually (I think 18 months or so) I got this offer again. Not bad.

I just need to find time to read it.

If you like media commentary, I've always been a fan of the Weekly Spin at PR Watch: http://www.prwatch.org/spin though I haven't followed it since my email address changed (I used to get weekly updates). Let me know if FAIR turns out to be any good.

What I'd really love nowadays is to find just one or two newspapers/magazines that are actually worth reading for ordinary news. I'm finding that the Guardian UK is pretty good, but you can't get anything Canadian from them. I tried Rabble, but it's too leftwing, which is something I never thought I'd complain about. I suppose that if the Right gets to be unbalanced, the Left can be too, but I'd really just like to find some good old fashioned fair and balanced reporting.

So far, the best I've ever seen was the portrayal of Edward R. Murrow's old broadcasts in Good Night and Good Luck. Why can't we just go back to the golden days of news?

BTW, I used to work for a magazine, so I can tell you that Wired doesn't care what you pay, if anything, so long as they can tell their advertisers that they have X million subscribers. If you go with anything small or independent though (like FAIR), advertising income is negligible and they live or die by subscriptions so you should support them with your $.
