Geekery

Every time Apple has a huge launch event, I watch the live updates with glee, but I never buy anything from Apple. It's ridicuous. Maybe I'll win the lottery. Or even start working for a profitable company. Naah, that's crazy.

hehe!

been watching since it started, and i can't wait to see this new version of iTunes. AND, if tobin and i can both sync both our ipods on both our laptops, i seriously will jizz in my pants.

that alone is worthy enough an announcement.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally!! I hate the syncing on multiple machines problems.

Looks like the new iTunes should let you do it.

"Now you can move content from iTunes among multiple computers if they are authorized on the same account!"

Although the word "move" might not be the same as "sync".

Yeah, what I want is a single music respository, but:

a) multiple PCs allowed to play from it
b) multiple iPods able to sync with it
c) those iPods able to sync with it from different PCs

Not sure how likely that is.

[identity profile] simplisticton.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if I understand correctly, c) is satisfied by iTunes 7. The first two could be handled by putting your music on a NAS and accessing it via DAV, Samba, or even old-school NFS.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I should not have said single repository. What I really meant is a synchronized repository. I've tried that with iTunes and it gets fucked up. I haven't tried very hard yet, but the experience was annoying enough that I didn't bother going any further.

I installed iTunes 7 last night, but mostly just played with the cover art and CD rack view. :)

[identity profile] simplisticton.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, what would happen if the iTunes DB file wasn't on the share, but the music was?

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I may have tried that. I wish I had done this recently so I could remember what I did. Trying this shit takes like 6 hours of copying, so it's really not appealing to try this again. I guess I should set up a test lab at work.

Mmmmm, drool, 8gb nano with colour screen....

[identity profile] primary-suspect.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, I like to see the new stuff, but only have an iPod Mini at home that rarely gets used.

[identity profile] simplisticton.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
As expected... I buy a 2GB nano, they release a the 4GB nano for the same price. It always happens to me.

I'm buying an AirPort Express to play music upstairs. I'm going to hack it to work with Linux just 'cos it'll piss of teh Steve.

[identity profile] sarah-sosiak.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a bus stop ad for the new nano a little before noon PDT today. Either Apple is /very/ fast, or they threw the ads up a little early hoping no one would notice.

My money is on the former.

[identity profile] sarah-sosiak.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
And by "fast" I mean "willing to throw a lot of money at the ad distribution company not to put the ads up until after the announcement".
