Debate notes

  • The moderator is amusingly casual. "Mr Layton, you want in on this?"
  • Did Gilles Duceppe have an Englishectomy? I know he speaks English better than that.
  • I'm playing NDP "Give 'em the boot II Bingo" and I'm winning!
  • The Bloc and the NDP never attack each other. I wish the Bloc would give up on separatism and merge with the NDP. They'd kick ass.
  • Off-topic: I'm supposed to be making potato salad right now. But I can't see the TV from the kitchen. Hmmm.
  • Stephen Harper just lied. He said "that's not correct" when asked about his tax increase plan.
  • I should disclose that I'm winning the bingo game against myself.
  • Favourite moment: Duceppe badgering Martin during Martin's answer on a Québec issue, so much so that Martin quietly sniped back en français.

Verdict: Unfortunately, Harper performed too well. Damnit.

That's precisely why I turned on the closed captioning. That, and for the sheer hilarity.

I'm really enjoying this debate, it's quite amusing.

I was saying something similar about Gilles' accent to a friend. I also wonder if my French accent is that awful. I think Gilles is putting on the bad accent to appeal to the bilingual Quebecois who are on the fence.

Did you notice how all of them continually look at their notes to remember what to promise... except for Jack?

I'm really enjoying it too. I liked the last one, but this one is better somehow. Not entirely sure what it is yet.

I noticed Jack is being careful about his repetition. He hasn't said Ed Broadbent once, and he's only said "more NDP MPs" once. Sounds pretty good.

I think it's the laid back (eye rolling) host, Mr. Steve Paikin. I hope they bring him back.

OOOOOh... I liked Steve's question "I've never heard you say you're running for Prime Minister." OOOOOOOOH.

Sadly, nobody would listen to anything he said after saying that sort of statement. But yeah, OOOOOOOH.

“I will not let the integrity of government be besmirched!”

I love the moderator! He's got more confidence as a speaker than Layton (also, I'm less impressed with Layton).

I vote for the moderator.

Yeah, Jack is being careful in his speech which is good (less repetition) but also bad (less passion and confidence).

I vote for Jack's 20 years on a city council where he's been making compromises and talking to everyone. :)

Go Steve!

Follow the herd... vote for one of the top guys.

If I wanted to follow the herd I'd be a straight American. *sigh*

You should check out the Globe's play-by-play.

Here;s a good example:

Question: Harper you accused Martin of avoiding taxes / Martin you accused Harper of not loving Canada. Are personal attacks productive?

(8:11) Martin: Personal attacks bad.
(8:12) Harper: Merely pointed out Martin avoided paying taxes.
(8:13) Duceppe: Martin fly's flags of convenience.
(8:14) Layton: More women in Parliament would help set the tone. We have the most female candidates.

OMGZOR! PERSONAL ATTACKS BAD. TAX EVADER!!!!!!! WOMEN! WE NEED WOMEN!!!! (ELECT MY WIFE PLEASE!)

This one is my fave. WTF?

Question for Layton: Should the notwithstanding clause be used to protect social values? i.e. Swingers clubs.

(8:44) Layton: Doesn't answer the question.

(8:45) Harper: Balance.

(8:46) Martin: Slams Harper. Doesn't answer the question.

(8:48) Duceppe: Something about principles and the people.

(8:49) Layton: Needs of working families' need to be recognized.

Ever see Harper at a photo-op? It looks like someone is shoving a red-hot poker up his ass the whole time. Now *THAT* would be a photo op I could enjoy!
