Proud Displays

Some bullets:
  • Added: Sometimes we think about leaving Kitchener for Waterloo, the trendier, younger, richer, prettier, more prosperous, more dentally-attended sibling of Kitchener. [livejournal.com profile] leapfish sent me a link to this house today, not because it's anything great, but because of the description. Highly recommended reading.
  • I've seen more people without sleeves on their shirts in Kitchener than in any other city in which I've lived.
  • Added: Kitchener used to be called Berlin.
  • I've seen more swastikas and iron crosses tattooed on sleeveless and shirtless individuals in Kitchener than in any other city in which I've lived.
  • A boring grey sedan drove by me the other day with a 50ish man driving. It was decorated with those hubcaps that spin independently from the wheel rim, typically meaning they actually stay still. They were Iron Crosses.
  • There's a town in northern Ontario called Swastika*.
Sometimes I feel so disconnected from other people around me and I just can't make that leap to understand where they're coming from. As a trainer I feel bad when I can't empathize with my students.

I definitely don't feel bad about it when it's some Nazi sympathizers.

* Swastika, Ontario was not named in honour of Nazism, it's older.

Forget WOW houses in Waterloo; I'm set to move to The Big Smoke.

Oh yeah, I forgot to include that ridiculous house! I shall edit appropriately.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

You have to admire their enthusiasm.

Nazis? Or the house people? :)

Eep, the house people. Not so much the nazis.

Though, they are enthusiastic.

Well you know to the swastika is also represented in various religions and is only associated primarily with the nazis party and thier crimes.

However, you shouldn't judge people on merely a tattoo. I know a guy I went to high school from who had one tattooed on his forehead - it was merely a religious symbol - however, when he moved to Canada he was harrassed because we only associate it with Nazi's.

The Iron Cross, well is't that also part of a logo for a biker line of clothing? I highly doubt that Kitchener is a hotbed of Nazi/Skinhead activity

I dont know, just threw that out for thought.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-08-10 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, and that's why I linked swastika with a wikipedia entry that details all those other non-Nazi connections.

A guy you went to high school from? :-)

I think a cross similar to the Iron Cross is used for biker stuff, and other things. Kitchener certainly is popular with the bikers, but south-western Ontario is also extremely popular with the racist, and right-wing, and religious groups in Canada. So I don't doubt it nearly as much as you.

Rednecks in Ontario ranks only as a double WOW in my books I'm afraid.

Cam, we almost went to Kitchener for our holidays this summer.

Oh, it's Steph, btw. hehe Shannon told me that you had an lj too. :o)

Only reason why we didn't...........gas prices. Yeesh.

Oh, just a note, I must say that I totally LOVE your new IKEA kitchen! To one who is ready to chuck her old laminaty 70's ugmo kitchen, I really need some exciting ideas, and yours, I love!!

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-08-10 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi Steph!! Long time no speak!

Thanks for the kudos -- the kitchen was so stressful, but is now rather enjoyable, in its 95% completed state. :)

This might be a totally dumb question, but I think it's just something I don't have reason to consider often.....do gas prices trend similarly everywhere (i.e. are Canadians experiencing similarly record high prices like we are here in Cleveland, Ohio USA?) I guess it always just feels like a personal conspiracy against me when gas prices rise....LOL

I think I need to post this question to my own LJ for further input and discussion....hmmm.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2005-08-12 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
To a certain extent, yes. Canada always has higher prices that the US (right now, we're averaging $1/Litre, or $3.78/gallon), but ours have shot up recently similar to in the US.

We also have the regional differences, like the US. In eastern Canada it's more expensive than in Alberta, where our oil is.

Did I already tell you that a transport truck was on fire in front of our condo when I went home for lunch?

Can we move yet? Can we move yet? Can we move yet?

[identity profile] whobunkyboo.livejournal.com 2005-08-10 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The hubby tells me that Kitchener and Waterloo were both home to some rather spectacular fires when he lived there as a kid.

Although the two were totally coincidental.

Really.

Dropped in from [livejournal.com profile] vorpal's journal....I think I've seen you around there before. :)

Anyhow, totally amused by the housing ad.....especially the exclamation points! WOW! WOW! WOW! Oh yeah, and I bet I can think of some amenities that it's not close to....
